Wednesday was the monthly Meatless Meetup at Merge Restaurant in downtown Buffalo. I hadn't been able to attend the meet-up since April, as I was away at my summer job. The group was started by Eliza Grace, co-owner of Merge, and is moderated by Mariah of Gone Bananas. Have you ever had dinner with 13 other vegans? Check www.meetup.com for activities in your area, join a group or start your own. It's so encouraging to see different faces every month, and to know there are so many other vegans in Buffalo!
Here's what I ate this time:
I started with a Caesar Salad with vegan ranch dressing and toasty chickpea croutons.
I sneaked a few bites of Gear's order of Smothered Sweet Potato Fries with spiced lentils, baby spinach and Daiya cheddar.
My favorite entreé, the BBQ Tostada with blueberry barbecue bean curd, pico de gallo, shredded cabbage and saffron cream, layered in toasty tortillas with rice and beans. So pretty!
Gear had the Ginger Coconut Stir Fry with tofu, soba noodles, broccoli, nori, peppers and mung sprouts. I may have to order something other than the tostada next time...
I was too full for dessert, but took a slice of peanut butter cheese cake home. It pretty much goes without saying that the aforementioned cheesecake was highly delicious.
I love Merge. Vegan, raw, or gluten-free? No problem. Fresh local ingredients. Fresh local art. Live jazz. Friendly staff. What's not to love? If you're vegan in Buffalo, head downtown to 439 Delaware Avenue - just don't try to go on a Monday. Merge is closed on Mondays.
